Gavin Guidry Study
After looking at my Shine study, a flaw I kept coming back to was my line weights. They usually looked thin. And so for this next study, I wanted to look at an artist who I admired and for a long time, Gavin Guidry.
The most beneficial part of this study, is that he posts his work alot. His Twitter/X is filled with all different stages of his work.
He posts panel layout:
Portrait Commissions
as well as just small successes on his art.
First thing off the bat, His face proportions are immaculate. He’s able to leave so few landmarks on the face and still nail it
This is somehow completely stylized and still unmistakably Christopher Reeves.
I wanted to try some portraits and pinpoint some things I noticed:
The eyes are something I struggled with. Gavin is able to give the illusion of an eyes reflection by simply not finishing the iris, and sometimes the pupil.
And the bottom eyelid and lip is usually incomplete.
Line weight under the chin is important.
I got a little sloppy with the brush pen after I completed the face and neck.
I felt the most confident with the eyes on this.
The Good: The line weight on the chin is good on this one. I added some crosshatching for the shadow.
The Bad: The proportions need work. I used the Loomis Method but i think the nose isnt quite there.
All in all, there’s a lot of great takeaways from Gavin Guidry’s art, and im excited to keep is influence in my future works.
